The Holy Prophet (sa) Fountain of Forgiveness

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.

It is said that forgiveness is the fragrance that flowers give when they are crushed.

In an example given by the Promised Messiah (as), to explain why the Prophet of Allah ﷺ had to endure so much suffering in his life, he reasoned that the only way to understand true value is through comparison.

He gave the example of a flower’s true beauty and tenderness, which becomes more pronounced when it stands against the thorns. In essence, this is why the Holy Prophet’s life was full of thorns, sometimes very literally, because his enemies would spread sharp thorns in front of his house, hoping to pierce the skin of his feet as he walked to prayer. But the Holy Prophet ﷺ was enabled by God to endure all the assaults with magnificent patience and forgiveness.

Each trial was an opportunity to demonstrate many of Allah’s attributes. The Holy Prophet ﷺ personifies Allah’s attribute of, ‘Al-Ghafoor’ the Most Forgiving, in various events in his life proving that he, indeed is, ‘Ya Sin’1: The perfect man, and indeed he is a fountain of forgiveness.

The Lady Who Used To Throw Trash:

A famous incident in our beloved Holy Prophet’s ﷺ life was when there was an older woman who had made a habit of throwing waste on the Holy Prophet ﷺ whenever he passed by her house. The story about this incident tells of a neighbour of the Prophet ﷺ that tried her best to irritate him by throwing rubbish on him every day. The waste was not old paper or plastic, she threw decade food and animal body parts, she saved this nasty rubbish all day, every day, just to throw it on the Holy Prophet ﷺ when he walked by her window.

She was so consistent in her actions that the Holy Prophet ﷺ noticed when she missed a few days, and when he asked about her and found out that she was sick, he went to visit her and offered her any assistance she might need. He took care of her and was gentle and loving, and served her water. After first witnessing his patience and now his total and complete forgiveness, this woman’s heart humbled, and she accepted Islam at the Prophet’s hands.

What led this woman to have such a dedication in her hatred for the Holy Prophet ﷺ?

She had been influenced by people who told her lies about the Holy Prophet ﷺ. Of course, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ naturally understood how susceptible humans are to propaganda.

The Holy Prophet’s ﷺ example of forgiveness is as relevant today as it was at the time of the Prophet ﷺ because this happens at the age of every Prophet. And today, society is exposed to similar propaganda daily. Whenever we look at our phones, we see the mainstream media creating fear of Muslims and confusion about Islam. When people act out in fear built on confusion and ignorance, most of them have no idea what they are doing. This is why the example of our Holy Prophet’s forgiveness is essential regardless of any era.

Not only did he forgive his enemies, but he also prayed for them reluctantly asking Allah to forgive them as well.

‘And it is by the great mercy of Allah that thou art kind towards them, and if thou hadst been rough and hard-hearted, they would surely have dispersed from around thee. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them…’ [Holy Qur’an 3:160]2

Kindness to Women:

Hazrat Ayesha (ra) relates that the Holy Prophet ﷺ would never be harsh with his wives and never raise a hand to them, contrary to the unforgiving behaviour of the pre-Islamic Arabs. She further relates that Prophet ﷺ never returned evil for evil and never held anyone’s past against them. Instead, he would forgive and pardon at every occasion.

He even forgave Habor, the man who attacked his daughter, Hazrat Zaynab (ra), causing her to lose her unborn child. Then there is Hind, the woman who cut organs out of his beloved uncle, Hazrat Hamzah (ra), so that she could chew on them in her insane rage. The Holy Prophet ﷺ forgave her too and prayed for her.

Forgiving the Enemy:

Imagine confronting the man responsible for the deaths of your wife, your daughter, your favourite uncle, or your friends. Would you meet them with anger? Would you be able to forgive them the same way Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did?

Most of us are familiar with what happened when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ returned to Makkah victorious and confronted his enemies after years in exile. The world witnessed the single most generous act of forgiveness in recorded history. To those Makkans who had sworn to destroy Islam, the Holy Prophet ﷺ stated, ‘No blame shall lie on you this day. May Allah forgive you.’

Even though they torched him, poisoned him, mocked him, had thrown waste and filth on him and lay thorns all around his house, they received nothing but love, comfort, and forgiveness from the noble Prophet of Allah ﷺ.

‘And good and evil are not alike. Repel evil with that which is best. And lo, he between whom and thyself was enmity will become as though he were a warm friend.’ [Holy Qur’an 41:35]3

The Holy Prophet (sa) liberator for women

Allah has promised to believers, men and women, Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide, and delightful dwelling places in Gardens of Eternity. And the pleasure of Allah is the greatest of all. That is the supreme triumph.

(Chapter 9, verse 72)

In Chapter 9 verse 72 of the Holy Qur’an, Allah explains that both women and men have equal spiritual status. The first time these words were heard was 1500 years ago in Arabia where women were second class citizens. Now, suddenly, eternal paradise was promised to women, as equals to men. And who brought this message to the world? It was the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) the liberator of women.

What does this mean for us today?

For ladies, instead of buying the bread and milk on the shopping list, they may decide to buy the pair of shoes they had had their eye on in the shop window.

Secondary school students may enjoy a certain subject that they wish to choose for their GCSE’s.

Younger Nasirat may enjoy spending time with their friends, enjoying their childhood before they take on the big responsibilities of adulthood.

We thank Allah for the little things in our lives, which are normal for us to experience and enjoy. But not all women had these opportunities. Because before the time of the Holy Prophet (sa) a woman’s life was not a life you would want to live. Imagine it like this:

Ladies would not have been able to buy those shoes because their husband would have used their money.

Students would not have been able to go to school as an education was not something to be ‘wasted’ on girls. They would have been treated as a slave as this was seen as their job.

Nasirat may not be alive to enjoy any kind of childhood because some Arabs killed baby girls.

This was until Allah sent the Holy Prophet (saw) to reverse these harmful and unfair customs and grant women respect. But with rights and freedoms also comes responsibilities. The Liberator of women, our beloved Prophet (saw) wanted us to be righteous, so that we can earn the paradise promised to us.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V (aba) stated at the National Ijtema in 2009:

“The Holy Prophet (saw) gave a most beautiful explanation of the status of women. He said that the world is a provision for this life , that is, the world is a means for this life; and there is no better provision in the world, than a virtuous woman”.

The Holy Prophet’s (SA) Kindness to Children

“And we have sent thee not but as a mercy for all peoples”

(The Holy Quran 21:108)

The Holy Prophet (sa) was sent by Allah the Almighty as a mercy to all mankind. Children were no exception. He taught parents to respect their children and to pray for them.

“Respect your children and cultivate (raise, care) in them the best of manners.” (Ibn Mājah)

He taught Muslims to treat their children equally and with justice. At the time of the Holy Prophet (sa) the Arabs would kill their daughters, sometimes burying them alive at birth because they thought they were a source of disgrace. This was because women at that time had no rights and were treated as if they were nothing more than slaves. The Holy Prophet (sa) abolished this cruel custom and gave women rights of inheritance which was unheard of.

“Anyone who has a daughter, does not bury her alive, does not humiliate her or give preference to the son over her, God Almighty will enter him in paradise.” This clearly shows how the Holy Prophet (sa) laid great value upon girls.

Regarding orphans, the Holy Prophet (sa) instructed his followers to look after the needs of orphans. He is reported to have said,

“Anyone who looks after the needs of an orphan and brings him or her up in the best possible manner, will be together in heaven like two fingers of a hand”.

TRAINING CHILDREN WITH KINDNESS

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) set excellent examples for training children. Huzoor (sa) trained them in such a way so they would flourish in God’s love as this would make them independent of everything except God. He always trained them with love and by offering prayers for them. He used to pray for them in the words, “O Allah, I love these children, so You love them too.”

He showed extreme consideration towards mothers and young children and would even shorten his prayer if he heard a child cry.

KEEP YOUR PROMISES

Once the Holy Prophet (saw) went to the house of one of his Companions. The woman of the house called her son, who was playing outside, in order to present him before the Holy Prophet (sa) to seek his blessings. She said ‘Come here, I will give you something to eat.’ (in order for her child to come and listen to her.) The Holy Prophet (saw) enquired, ‘what are you promising to give him?’ She replied, ‘A dried date.’ The Holy Prophet (sa) remarked, ‘If you promise something to a child and you do not keep your promise, you commit the same sin as the one who tells a lie.” This teaches how important it is for parents to always keep their  promises to children as they’ll also do so in future.

AFFECTION FOR HIS OWN CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN

Hazrat Anas bin Malik(ra) said that he had not seen anyone more loving and affectionate towards children than the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) Once Huzoor (saw) was kissing his children with love, a Bedouin chief was watching and remarked on this saying, “I have ten children but I have never kissed them.” The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) said with sadness, “If God has deprived your heart of love, there is nothing I can do about that.”

It is related that very often when he was riding a horse or a camel, he would carry his grandson on the horse either on his back or his front and sometimes upon his shoulders. Very often the Companions of the Holy Prophet (sa) would see Hasan, his grandson, seated on his right thigh while Usama, the son of his freed slave Hazrat Zaid (ra), seated on his left thigh. He would embrace both of them lovingly and pray, ‘O Lord! Shower Thy Mercy and Grace, on both of them.’

Hazrat Abu Qatadah (ra) relates that once “We were waiting for Salat. The Holy Prophet (sa) appeared with his granddaughter, Umama on his shoulder. Umama stayed on Huzoor’s (sa) shoulder. He started the Salat and we followed him. When Huzoor (sa) prostrated, he put Umama down and when he stood, he carried her again.

Hazrat Ya‘la ‘Amari (ra) relates, “I was accompanying the Holy Prophet (sa) to a feast, when we saw young Husain who was the Holy Prophet’s grandson, playing with other children. Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) engaged in playing with him and tried to catch him. Husain started to run around. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) made him laugh and in the end caught him. He then placed his one hand at the back of his head the other hand under his chin and by bringing his face near to his own, started to kiss him. He said, “Husain is from me and I am from Husain whosoever loves Husain, Allah will love him. Husain is our progeny.”

LOVE FOR THE CHILDREN OF COMPANIONS

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) when visiting the homes of the Ansar, would caress their children and pray for them. When a child was born he would give them a bit of a date as blessing.

Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin Harithra (ra) relates; “The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) used to make Hazrat ‘Abbas’s (ra) children, ‘Abdullah and ‘Ubaidullah and other children stand in a row and would tell them to race towards him. He told them that whoever raced to him first would get a reward. The children would race towards him and if one climbed up on his back the other would be riding on his chest. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) would kiss them and embrace them.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) used to say humorous things to children and kept them close to himself. Once he visited his attendant, Anas’s house. He enquired from his younger brother as to why he was so sad. Huzoor (sa) was told that his pet starling had died. Later on whenever Huzoor (sa) visited his house, he would lovingly tease him saying, “O Abu ‘Umair, tell me about your starling.” Imagine how the child must have enjoyed talking about his pet with the holy Prophet (sa) by feeling the importance that was given to him.

Children loved his company. Seeing him in the street the children would come to him jumping with joy. He would pick them up one by one, cuddle them, kiss them and pray for them. Sometimes it so happened that a mother handed him over her baby to seek his blessing. Once while he was holding a baby in his arms, the baby wetted. The Holy Prophet (sa) did not mind. Instead he immediately got his clothes washed.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (ra) relates, “Whenever a new fruit of the season was brought to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) he would pray for blessings from the fruit and would then offer the fruit to the youngest child present in that gathering.

LOVE FOR THE CHILDREN OF MARTYRS.

Hazrat Ja‘far (ra) was martyred in the battle of Mu’tah. His wife Asma relates, “The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) visited our house and asked for our children to be brought to him. He embraced them and cuddled them. His eyes were brimming with tears. Asma enquired ‘Why are you crying. Is there any news about Ja‘far’? He replied, “Yes, he has been martyred in the way of Allah”.

Huzoor (sa) particularly had felt great love and concern for orphans. This shows how much the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) cared and loved children. He was a model for mankind in order that we follow his actions by cherishing all children whether they be their own or not.

The Holy Qur’an – proof of the existence of God

The Holy Qur’an is the compilation of the revelations given to the Holy Prophet (saw) 15,000 years ago. The Holy Qur’an was revealed to the Holy Prophet (saw) over a period of 23 years and is also known by many other names, including al Burhan (The Argument), al Haqq (The Truth) and al Tanzil (The Revelation).

Not only is the Holy Qur’an a holy book of guidance for all Muslims, but the existence of the Holy Qur’an itself is also a powerful proof for the very existence of an ever-living God.

The text of the Holy Qur’an is unchanged to this day

Millions of copies of the Holy Qur’an exist across the world today. Every copy to have ever existed is identical and completely unchanged, word for word, from the text that was revealed 15,000 years ago. This perfect preservation of the Holy Quran is no coincident; rather Allah himself promised that the Holy Qur’an would be safeguarded in its original form. Allah says:

Verily, We Ourselves have sent down this Exhortation, and most surely We will be its Guardian. (Al-Hijr, 15:10)

This verse is powerful proof that only a divine creator could have written this holy scripture, meaning the existence of the Qur’an itself is testament to the legitimacy of its origin. No mere mortal could claim such a strong prediction about the preservation of a book.

The Holy Qur’an contains true and accurate prophecies about the future

Not only is the Holy Qur’an a book of guidance, providing moral and social codes for Muslims to live by, but it also contains prophecies about the future, some of which have been fulfilled already. Examples of a few such prophecies include:

Pollution

“Corruption has spread on land and sea because of what men’s hands have wrought”

This verse signifies the environmental pollution that is currently widespread and has been caused by the action of humans. Both the land and the sea have been affected, from oil spills in the sea to deforestation of trees and chemical fumes in the air from factories.

Genetic Engineering

“They will alter Allah’s creation.” (4:120)

This verse so simply predicted modern day science of genetic engineering and cloning, as well as plastic surgery.

Roads in Mountains

“And when the mountains are made to move.” (81:4)

At the time of the revelation of the Holy Qur’an, travelling across mountains was an impossible task. After the invention of dynamite, humans were able to make tunnels through mountains to travel across them, as if the mountains had been ‘moved out of the way’ as this verse prophesied.

New Transport Systems

“And He has created horses and mules and asses that you may ride them, and as a source of beauty. And He will create what you do not yet know.” (16:9)

This prophecy has been continuously fulfilled since its revelation, as modes of transport have been completely revolutionised and newer, faster modes of transport continue to be developed to this day.

Air Traffic Systems

“And by the heaven full of tracks” (51:8)

The Holy Qur’an specifically foretold the invention of air travel in this simple verse, a thought that was unimaginable some 15,000 years ago.

Modern Communication Systems

“And when various people are brought together.” (81:8)

There was a time when humans did not realise that civilisations were spread across the world or how to reach them once they did. Now, a 10 hour plane journey can enable us to cross the Atlantic ocean and unite us with humans living in Canada. Furthermore, the invention of telephones and the internet has enabled us to almost instantaneously connect with people across the globe.

DNA Fingerprinting

“Their skins will bear witness against them as to what they have been doing.” (41:21)

This verse of the Quran talks about the discovery of DNA and fingerprinting. Now, fingerprints are used as identification as well as evidence in crime scenes to find the perpetrator.

Extra-Terrestrial Life

“And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and of whatever living creatures He has spread forth in both. And He has the power to gather them together whenever He pleases.” (42:30)

It is only recently that the presence of extra-terrestrial life has been proven by scientists. We have still not been able to make contact with or see them. Allah has hinted about this scientific progress that is yet to occur!

Conclusion

The existence of the Holy Qur’an stands as proof to the existence of a divine Creator. Even if there was no other proof of the existence of God, the preservation of its each and every word 15,000 years later alone is sufficient to establish the divine origin of the Holy Qur’an. Furthermore, the countless prophecies in the Holy Qur’an that have been fulfilled to this day and will continue to be proved true in the future are not possible by mere chance.

The Promised Messiah (as) says:

“I can confidently claim that anyone who endeavours to write in defence of the Being and existence of Allah Almighty will ultimately have no choice but to accept the God presented by Islam. For every page of the Book of Nature testifies to His Being and man naturally bears the impress of the very same God in his person.” (Malfoozat Volume 1, page 80)

The Holy Qur’an – The Complete & Final Law

“In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful. Ha Mim. By this perspicuous Book, We have made it a Qur’an in clear, eloquent language that you may understand. And surely, it is safe with Us in the Mother of the Book, exalted and full of wisdom.”

(The Holy Qur’an, Chapter 43: Az-Zukhruf, Verse 1-5)

The Holy Qur’an is the Holy Scripture of Muslims and a compilation of the verbal revelations given to The Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) over a period of 23 years. The language of the Holy Qur’an is Arabic. It is divided into 114 Chapters with each Chapter containing individual verses which lay down the law, commandments and the codes for social and moral behaviour. In a nutshell, it is a complete guidance for mankind. The Holy Qur’an expounds on the subject of God, His attributes and man’s relationship with Him. It also explicitly states the rights that are due to God and the rights due to mankind so that man is aware of his or her duties in the life of this world in preparation of the hereafter. Moreover, the Holy Qur’an warns mankind and makes the wrongdoers aware of an impending punishment unless they repent and take heed as well as giving the believers and the doers of good, glad tidings of the ultimate reward. In doing so, it demonstrates a very crisp and clear picture of the philosophies of religion for all times.

For instance, in the verse mentioned above, God Almighty describes the Holy Qur’an as a book which is “exalted” and “full of wisdom”. The word “exalted” signifies its status of being at the top of all revealed scriptures which God had ever granted mankind. This proves the Holy Qur’an to be the Final Law as it is the ultimate in rank. Moreover, the expression, “full of wisdom” means that the Holy Qur’an is complete, in that it leaves out nothing which is relevant. Thus, God Almighty explains the Holy Qur’an to be the complete and final law for all of mankind.

The Holy Qur’an can also be viewed as the final and complete law because it has been delivered for all of mankind. This can be seen by the way it addresses its readers. Its audience is universal in that it addresses all of mankind and does not discriminate by race, colour or creed. For example, Allah the Almighty states,

“And, surely, We have explained in various ways in this Qur’an, for the good of mankind, all kinds of similitudes, but of all things man is most contentious.” (The Holy Qur’an, Chapter 18: Al-Kahf, Verse 55)

In contrast, the Holy Scriptures revealed before the Holy Qur’an were geographically limited and delivered the revelations contained within them to specific communities. For instance, one finds that God has been described in these earlier Scriptures as, “Lord, The God of Israel” (The Holy Bible, 1 Kings 8:23) or “God of the Armies of Israel” (The Holy Bible, 1 Samuel 17:45). This shows that the audience for these scriptures is not universal.

Additionally, unlike other former Holy Scriptures which have had their texts interpolated by men, God Almighty promises to keep the Holy Qur’an safeguarded against all forms of interpolations or changes until the end of time by stating,

“Verily, We Ourself have sent down this Exhortation, and most surely We will be its Guardian.” (The Holy Quran, Chapter 15: Al-Hijr, Verse 10)

God Almighty also states whilst referring to the Holy Qur’an,

“The Spirit, Faithful to the Trust, has descended with it.” (The Holy Qur’an, Chapter 26: Ash-Shu’ara, Verse 194)

Meaning that the arch-angel Gabriel (as), the spirit which is faithful to the Trust, has descended with the Holy Qur’an. Therefore, the text of the Holy Qur’an will forever be under Divine protection, with no gaps or interpolations to be found within it until the end of time. This yet again proves the Holy Qur’an as the final law. Indeed, the text of the Holy Qur’an has remained unchanged over the past 1500 years; each and every single copy of the Holy Qur’an that has been published and circulated in the world today is identical to a single letter and thus proves its authenticity by itself.

The Holy Qur’an contains explanations of “all kinds of similitudes” for people when it addresses a specific claim or guidance. In doing so, it provides its own arguments to substantiate its claims and does not rely on another resource to provide any sort of proof.

The former Holy Scriptures also mention the Qur’an as God Almighty states,

“And it is surely mentioned in the Scriptures of the former peoples.” (The Holy Qur’an, Chapter 26: Ash-Shuara, Verse 197)

For instance, it states in the Torah (Deuteronomy, 18:18) that, “I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put My words in his mouth and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.”  The word, “all” refers to a whole or complete revelation which has been beautifully compiled in the Holy Qur’an. Moreover, Jesus (as) said in the New Testament (John, 16:12:13) that, “I have many more things to say to you but you cannot bear them now but when he, the spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” The “spirit of truth” refers to The Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) and again the word, “all” refers to the complete and final law, the Holy Qur’an.

Another way in which the Holy Qur’an proves itself as the complete and final law is by explicitly explaining the truth which can be seen in history, past, present and future. For example, the case of the Pharaoh, Rameses the second, the man who persecuted Moses (as) and his followers, has been described in both the Bible and the Holy Qur’an. The Bible states, “Then the waters returned and covered the chariots and the army of Pharaoh was drowned… not so much as one of them remained.”  Thus, the Bible purports to say that all men drowned, including Pharaoh. However, the facts do not align with this. God Almighty states in the Holy Qur’an,

“So this day We will save thee in thy body alone that thou mayest be a Sign to those who come after thee. And surely, many of mankind are heedless of Our Signs.” (The Holy Qur’an, Chapter 10: Yunus, Verse 93)

The extraordinary expression, “We will save thee in thy body”, clearly makes a reference to mummification and indeed, that is how Pharaoh has been preserved and can be viewed in the Royal Museum of Cairo, to this date. Interestingly, the French Scientist who conducted research on Pharaoh’s mummy, found that Pharaoh did not actually drown to death but was rather left as a lifeless and bed ridden object which the remains of the salt stuck in his body evidently revealed. This French Scientist, Professor Maurice Bucaille, even converted from Christianity to Islam because of this groundbreaking discovery as he was startled about how the Holy Qur’an had revealed the historic incident of the mummification of Pharaoh’s body 1500 years ago, when the mummy was only discovered and presented to the public in 1898. Most surely, it is the words of Allah that have proven to come true as a great prophecy yet again in the final and complete law.

The above-mentioned comparisons of the Torah and the Bible to the Holy Qur’an demonstrate that the jewels of knowledge contained in previous revealed Scriptures find perfection and completion in the complete and final law which is the Holy Qur’an.

The Holy Qur’an and Water

On a quiet relaxed weekend morning, I was slumped on the sofa enjoying my favourite book, when I became distracted by the sound of heavy rain. I sat back and glanced out of the window but to my surprise, it wasn’t raining. I went up to look where the sound was coming from – someone had left the shower running to heat up the bathroom and the water. As I was walking back down the stairs an image flashed before my mind of children in parts of the world who walk for miles to get a little water to survive and it made me think how it is so easy to forget about other people around the world who are in desperate need for something that is taken advantage of water.

children rushng for miles to get clean water for drinking purposes

Water is an important means of survival and a blessing for us the Holy Qur’an says, and it is Allah “Who gives me food and gives me drink” [26:80].

Clean, freshwater helps our brains function, little access to clean water increases the risk of disease and long-term health problems that can be prevented. By donating to projects like the Humanity First Water for Life project we can contribute towards the range of clean water solutions being provided for people in low-income countries.

Leaving the tap running whilst brushing our teeth or washing dishes has become the norm in many households. We should try to reduce the amount of food and drink we waste to please Allah and help the environment as he has sent “down from the sky water which is full of blessings, and we produce therewith gardens and grain harvests” [50:10], consequently, we should reuse and recycle water. Recycling is a process and regarded as a key part of the green movement. Recycling doesn’t mean we can only renew certain materials like plastics, paper and glass. Recycling water helps to conserve energy as well as other natural resources.  Islam guides us to consider our environment and our surroundings the Holy Qur’an says,

“He it is Who sends down water for you from the clouds; out of it you have your drink, and there grow from it trees on which you pasture your cattle.” [16:11]

By installing a rain barrel, collected rainwater can be boiled to drink and wash dishes or vegetables. Water used for washing clothes can be recollected and used to mop floors or be used in toilets or for plants. Also, by reusing water from a glass or bottle, you can feed your plants, rinse or soak dishes or use it to flush the toilet. Most water we use in the kitchen can be recycled: leftover tea water without sugar can be used to feed plants. Additionally, the water used to wash vegetables is 100% reusable to wash dishes, clean the house, feed the plants or flush the toilet. When we cook pasta, the water doesn’t need to be thrown down the drain, the colander can be placed over a large pot and the pasta water can be used in the garden. Whilst waiting for the shower to warm up, we can collect the excess water in a bucket to wash the dishes or cook with. There are various ways to recycle water outdoors too, for example, whilst watering plants, the drain water from plant pots can be collected with a thick waterproof sheet or box and used to flush the toilet or water other plants.

The Holy Quran mentions “Say, Tell me, if all your water were to disappear in the earth, who then will bring you clear flowing water?” [67:31]

This verse informs us that all life whether physical or spiritual depends on water. We are ever grateful to Allah that he has provided us with water on the earth to drink and grow crops from. It is good to be thankful and mindful instead of wasting.

The Holy Quran says “Do you see the water which you drink? Is it you who send it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender? If We so pleased, We could make it bitter. Why, then, are you not grateful?” [56:69-71].

If we find ways to save the environment and help others, we will be rewarded for it in the hereafter: “and if they keep to the right path, We shall certainly provide them with abundant water to drink” [72:17]

“Remember me, and I will remember you; and be thankful to me and do not be ungrateful to me” [2:153].

DIY String Hearts

 SUPPLIES:

  • piece of wood – the bigger the more dramtic!
  • string – we used the pink neon thin rope you can find at Home Depot, but you could use any yarn or string
  • box of nails (if want a nail with a decent head so the string won’t pop off)
  • spray paint to paint the wood
  • white paper to draw the heart on

PROCEDURE:

    1. Spray paint the wood the background color you picked. We used dark gray, so the pink would really pop

    2. Once the paint is dry, tape the wood with the white paper and draw the heart shape on the paper

     3. Time to get the hammer out! Nail around the entire outline of the heart – we spaced our nails about an inch apart.

     4. Once all your nails are in. Remove the white paper and throw it away.

     5. Now the fun part. Get your string and tie a knot around the head of one of the nails. Keep stringing the string around nails. There isn’t a right or wrong way – just keep going until you like the pattern you created. I also then outlined the entire heart to make the outline pop a bit more also.

Easy Homemade Tassel Bookmarks

SUPPLIES:

  • Double-sided decorative cardstock
  • scrapbook paper cut into 8″ x 2″ pieces
  • Yarn (use thinner weight yarn)
  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch (use a small 1/8″ circle hole punch)
  • Laminator (optional)

PROCEDURE:

  1. Start by wrapping yarn around your four fingers, but not too tight. You want to make sure you have room to tie the tassel knot at the top. When you have your desired weight or bulk of yarn for your tassel, cut off the end leaving about 8 inches hanging down.
  2. Then take the end and wound it between your index and middle fingers a couple times and pull. Create a knot here and carefully released yarn from your bottom three fingers.

      3.  Then with your scissors, cut the bottom                                yarn loop creating a nice fringe for your                                  homemade tassel.

      4.  Finally, secure another piece of yarn (about 9″                    long and folded in half) by sliding it through                        the top loops and stringing the cut ends                                through the folded end and pulling tight                              creating a knot at the top. Voila! You now                              have a pretty tassel.

       5. Then it’s just a matter of attaching it to your                        pretty paper. Punch a hole at the top and                              secured with a knot at the top, trimming off                        any excess yarn.

Christmas – Theme of the Month

Christmas is a Christian celebration marking the birth of Hazrat Isa (as) which takes place on 25th of December in the West, but not in the Eastern Orthodox community, who in fact celebrate it on the 7th of January. The celebration was created some hundred years after Christianity began and the way in which people celebrate it has changed too.

It used to be a time for reflection on the teachings of Hazrat Isa (as), visiting Church for mass and praying. Now it is more focussed on buying presents, having parties, drinking and decorations. You may even find that your non-Christian friends are celebrating Christmas too. So why don’t we celebrate it?

It is important to remember that Christmas is not an Islamic celebration. As Muslims, we don’t even celebrate the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammed (saw), so why would we celebrate the birthday of any other prophet? The reason we don’t celebrate birthdays of prophets is because birthdays aren’t important, what is more important are the teachings and examples that the prophets have given us.

What is strange about the 25th of December is that this date is actually incorrect, as Hazrat Isa (as) was not born in Winter.

The Holy Quran teaches us that he was born at a time when fresh dates are found on palm-trees in Judea. After delivering Hazrat Isa (as) under a palm-tree an angel spoke to Hazrat Maryam (as) saying:

And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree; it will drop upon thee fresh ripe dates. (19:26).

So, not only are Christians celebrating a prophet’s birthday, which is below the esteem that Allah has granted him, but they’re also doing so in the wrong month! This shows two very good reasons why we as Muslims shouldn’t join in with Christmas celebrations.

As Muslims we get the chance to celebrate two Eids every year and both have meaning as well as many blessings associated with them. This isn’t to say that you can’t enjoy the winter season; we can enjoy the lights, eat mince pies and send season’s greetings cards to our friends. Each year, the jamaat prints out season’s greeting card which you can distribute to friends and neighbours.

Moreover, we can respect their festivities by taking extra care of the elderly who are lonely at this special time in their lives. We can visit sick children in hospitals, and we can feed the homeless who are neglected. Not forgetting our neighbours, to check to see if they are in need of anything which you can help them with. This is how an Ahmadi would celebrate this festive holiday.

Glitery Graphic Pencil Case – DIY Art Project

SUPPLIES:

  • Pencil Cases

  • White Paint + Colored Paint of Your Choice (We

    used neon!)

  • Paint Brush

  • Label/Adhesive Paper

  • Scissors or Craft Knife

  • Mod Podge

  • Glitter

  • Confetti

  • Printable Stencil

PROCEDURE:

1.     Print out the stencil templates (or other

or a craft knife (be really careful!). Be sure to save

the hearts from the inside of the glasses and the

center of the “O” from ZOMG.

2.     Peel the backing off the stencil and adhere to the pencil case where desired.

3.     Paint over the stencil with white paint to act as a primer. Let dry completely.

4.     Paint with your color of choice and let dry, then peel back your stencil! If any paint seeped through, clean up the edges with a thin paint brush.

5.     For the sunglasses: Adhere just the outline of the hearts to start and paint white. Let dry. Then put the “lens” cutouts that you saved on top of the white paint. (If the adhesive backing is super sticky, stick it onto your hand first to dull down some of the adhesive.) Then paint with the color you’d like and let dry. Remove the stencils. Lastly, paint mod podge over the remaining white heart shapes and sprinkle with glitter. Let dry, then seal with a final layer of mod podge over top the glitter!

6.     Fort the confetti case: Paint the entire side of the case with mod podge and sprinkle with confetti. Let dry. If necessary repeat with a second layer, otherwise seal the confetti on with a final layer of mod podge.

Paint Scrape Eid Cards – DIY Art Project

SUPPLIES:

  • Heavyweight paper, such as cardstock or          watercolour paper trimmed to 8.5″ x 5.5″

  • A2 sized envelopes

  • Acrylic Paints (Thicker paints may need to be         thinned with water.)

  • Masking Tape or Washi Tape

  • Old Credit Card or Rewards Card

  • Paper Towel and Cleaner or Wipes – you will                    be making a mess!

  • Metallic Gold Alphabet Letter Stickers (or              whatever stickers you like)

PROCEDURE:

1.     Start by taping your paper down to your work        surface. Since I was making notecards, I had my              paper cut to 8.5″ x 5.5″. Your work surface will be         getting paint on it, so please don’t do it on your      expensive marble countertops or your heirloom              chest. Have cleaner on hand to clean up quickly                after each piece.

2.     Drip drops of paint along one side of your  paper. Stagger the drops and vary the colours. Have fun Experimenting with drop placements  and colour combinations.

3.     Place an old credit card or gift card above the drops on one side of the card and scrape down pulling the card off the edge of the paper on the other side.

4.     Wipe off the card and remove all the paint before moving to the other side. This will keep both sides looking the same and keep your colors from mixing too much.

5.     Repeat step 3, scraping the paint down off the edge of the paper again.

6.     Finally, peel up your piece from the work surface and wipe away any paint that went off the edge of the card.

7.     Okay, so after you have scraped your paint, cleaned up your mess, and let your beautiful artwork dry, you are ready to finish up your cards.

8.     All that’s left to do is fold them in half and add a greeting to the front (if you like). When your cards are folded, you can call them done if you like a simple abstract look, or you can add greetings to the front with letter stickers. You can use a variety of metallic gold stickers for the cards.

United Under One Hand: Memories With Khilafat

Our mulaqat was in November 2018. First, we greeted Huzoor (may Allah be His helper), and then we sat down. A few minutes later, he asked me: “What have you got in that book?” In my hand was a book that I had brought with me in which I had written some ahadith. I showed Huzoor (may Allah be His helper), and he was very impressed. He said that my handwriting was very neat. Then he called my sisters, Saariya and Manaahil. He gave each of us a chocolate and a pen. Finally, we had a picture of everyone with Huzoor (may Allah be His helper). Sabeeka Rashed, age 9

My name is Naima and I am 10 years old. Let me tell you about my most memorable moment with beloved Huzoor (may Allah be His helper). My most memorable moment with beloved Huzoor (may Allah be His helper), was when I got a prize for my Nazam at the National Ijtema 2018 from Huzoor (may Allah be His helper). When my name got called up, I felt nervous but happy at the same time because all I ever wanted in my life was to get an award from beloved Huzoor (may Allah be His helper). Whilst we were waiting for beloved Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) to arrive, I was waiting eagerly for the life time moment to arrive for me to get an award and cherish this beautiful memory forever. Now whenever I see the beautiful trophy that I received from the blessed hands of Huzoor (may Allah be His helper), I re-live the moment and thank Allah to give me this opportunity. I hope all of you reading this get to experience a moment with our beloved Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) that you can remember forever. Naima Ahmed, age 10

I’m going to tell you my most memorable moment with my beloved Huzoor (may Allah be His helper). We were sitting outside in the scorching heat under the canopies. It was last year’s UK’s Jalsa (2018). Temperature was in the 30s. Children, babies, adults were all hot and it was extremely difficult to find any shade. The heat was unbearable. It was the second day of Jalsa, when Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) goes to the ladies for the Lajna address. However, due to the weather, it was hard to concentrate. Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) ‘s speech ended, and then the Nasirat and Lajna Nazam presentations were being echoed throughout. We knew it might be the time that Huzoor could come out very soon. It was all hope, that our beloved Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) possibly might pass our way. But this can only happen sometimes. No one knows if this year would be that lucky year. However, as always, my mum told us to pray that Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) indeed does pass so we are able to see him, even just a glimpse would make our Jalsa the best ever.

I am eager, excited, nervous and start to pray.  We look around and hear notifications from the duty holders for everyone to stay seated, remain quiet, and not move, as Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) will probably pass our way. We all shriek in excitement and our hearts are filled with happiness and joy. My mum says to me and my younger brother and sister to sit close and say salaam and wave when Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) passes. We wait. Then, something happens. Everyone starts to move out of their places. The duty holders tell us Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) is not coming this way. Oh no!! I am so sad. It was so close!

But hang on. What’s that happening now? Oh, my goodness! Huzoor (may Allah be His helper)!!! There he is!! We see him walking! Oh My God, we are stunned. He’s coming our way!! We are huddled together and come up on our knees to get a better look. Masha’Allah he is so beautiful. Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) is walking so gracefully and saying salaam to everyone as he passes. Then, he starts approaching us and waves! Oh wow, it was beautiful. We were all shrieking with happiness!

We start to say how staying in the heat was all worthwhile in the end. But wait a minute. Again?! We can see Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) coming back!! He’s going to pass us the second time! This is unbelievable! We are literally just staring in amazement. Our beloved Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) passed us twice! Alhamdolillah. I cannot explain the joy of that day.  The weather was unbearable, but as my mum said, it was all worth every pain and discomfort seeing the real, cool sun come our way! There are many memorable memories with beloved Huzoor (may Allah be His helper), but I really wanted to share this one with you, as I’m sure it’s something we all can relate to.  Inaya Ahmad

One of my fondest memories of Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) from when I was younger happened when we were staying at Hadeeqatul Mahdi during Jalsa. I think I would have been around 6 or 7 at the time. It was late in the evening and my older brother and I were fighting as per usual. One thing led to another and it resulted in my bracelet being broken. It was my favourite bracelet and I think I must have been somewhat devastated because the way it was broken seemed irreversible. I can’t remember exactly what happened after that but later that evening I was stood next to Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) who was working at his desk. I remember him taking my bracelet (well, at the point it was more like a singular chain) and examining it carefully under the light of the lamp. I looked at his hands with curiosity as I saw him working with the metal clasp of the bracelet. It wasn’t possible to restore to how it was originally but by bending the mental chains he managed to join the bracelet in a different way. I looked on with fascination as I saw my bracelet fixed. Now that I’m older and more aware I know how busy Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) is during Jalsa and it makes me immeasurably grateful that he was able to take time out of his schedule to solve such a comparatively insignificant issue. It also taught me the valuable lesson of not giving up even if a solution isn’t immediately obvious. Yusra Dahri

2014 was my first travel to see my beloved Khalifa at UK Jalsa. I remember during the USA delegation Mulaqat Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) mentioning Hasan Hakeem of Zion Jamaat and Haji Dhul Yahqub of Milwaukee Jamaat and his wife Nycemah being his dear African American friends who lived some time in Ghana while he was there. Hearing that, I felt so proud and touched that Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) and I had close connections to these humble individuals. When the mic was passed to the ladies side everyone gave short introductions. I sat in the back row. After each lady Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) asked if they were a convert. Each said no but born Ahmadi. When the mic came to me I introduced myself. Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) said to me you must be born Ahmadi. I said yes. He said you look like a born Ahmadi. My heart had melted! It was amazing and a feeling of acceptance that my Khalifa could see that I was born Ahmadi. During my time in London for Jalsa everyone I had approached or approached me assumed I was a convert. I had no idea why they assumed that but Huzoor (may Allah be His helper) could tell right off the bat that I am born and raised Ahmadi which made me feel so special and confirmed to myself that I have been carrying my Ahmadiyyat well and my parents have raised me well to the best of their abilities. Khalida Bakr – USA

It was the year 1956, I was in year 10 and Hazrat Musleh Ma’ood (ra) was writing the Tafseer of the Holy Qur’an, “Tafseer-e-Sagheer”. Huzoor (ra)used to call students from year nine and ten to come and listen to the Tafseer of the Holy Qur’an with his wife, Hazrat Uma-e-Nasir Sahiba. While Huzoor (ra) would be reciting the Tafseer, Hazrat “Choti appa” Maryam Siddiqa sahiba used to take notes. This was a regular practise, occurring twice a week in the mornings. Huzoor (ra) never sat on a chair, rather he would sit on the floor on a mattress with a big round pillow to rest his arm on. There was a very spiritual atmosphere and whenever I think about those days, I count myself very lucky.

Another beautiful memory I have with Hazrat Musleh Ma’ood (ra) is during the days of Jalsa Salana in Pakistan. Rabwah used to be a very busy city with so many special trains and buses hired for the event. Hazrat Musleh Ma’ood (ra)used to take Bai’at (pledge of allegiance) in the morning before the Jalsa Salana programme used to start. The arrangements for the ladies to take Bai’at used to be in Hazrat Ume Nasir Sahiba’s  house. Huzoor (ra) as usual used to sit on the floor on a mattress with a round pillow. I used to do duty with one of my teachers known as “Ustani Memoona” who was Nazima. My duty was filling out the Bai’at forms and taking the thumb impressions. One of Huzoor (ra) wives sat near Huzoor (ra) and the Lajna would put their hand on her hand one by one, repeating the words. We were not sitting too far from Hazrat Musleh Ma’ood (ra) but at the time didn’t realise. I consider myself one of the luckiest people having experienced those blessed days. Halima Rashid

I went to Jalsa three years ago, and for me it was the best experience I’ve ever had by far. I want to start by saying that I wasn’t expecting to be invited to go, plus it was my first time going out of my country. But since I was invited, I got lots of expectations of this great event, expectations that were later overcome at Jalsa UK. The first thing I saw and felt when I arrived to Jamia UK was the warm welcoming, it felt like being with my family, it felt like being in my country. Love was floating in the air, everyone smiling, new people meeting and talking… It was a paradise for me. I felt so relaxed, confident, happy and blessed. I met so many people, everyone was so kind, and it reminded me why I’m Ahmadi Muslim now, Alhamdolillah. It also reinforced my faith, and I could see that we are more than just a few people in my Jamaat. It empowered me to spread the word, even more than I was doing at that time. Insha’Allah.

I also met the Khalifa (Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (may Allah be His helper)), but at that time it had only been months of me being a new Muslim, so I didn’t really know what to do, how to feel about it and most importantly, how important was the Khalifa. But I really wanted to learn more, and I thought that meeting the Khalifa could change this perspective. And it did. I remember, the days before the meeting, I had so many questions, but when I met him all those questions just went away, I was in a blank state. I just introduced myself to him and I told him how happy I was. In the end, it was nice to meet him, nice to listen to his answers which he gave to the other members of my Mexican delegation. Maybe I didn’t do many questions at that moment, but those questions remained in my mind, and in a certain way it has helped me to send these questions in my letters to Huzoor (may Allah be His helper), and only God knows, but this has surely helped me to build a relationship with the Khilafat through these years, Alhamdolillah. Alicia Fabiola Gonzalez Crespo – Mexico

The Promised Messiah (as)

Background

  • He was born in 1835 in Qadian, India.
  • He was from a noble family, land owning family of Qadian.
  • He was educated mainly at home by various tutors as was usual at that time. His education mainly consisted of reading in Persian and Arabic, becoming relatively fluent in the former.
  • He had a very deep love for the Holy Qur’an and for prayer.
  • Most of his time was spent on learning the Holy Qur’an in depth and studying other religions.

Qadian Darul Aman

In 1835 Qadian was a small, dusty village situated in the district of Punjab in India which was very hard to reach.

  • Not many visitors came to Qadian, nor was there a train station at that time.
  • Over time, many left their homes and their belongings, which were sometimes quite affluent, to go and live in the small unknown village of Qadian in India, which for them appeared to be in the wilderness, separated from any main town or transport provisions by a day’s journey.
  • Now Qadian is a large town with schools, offices and a train station. Many visitors come every year to visit the birthplace of the Promised Messiah (as).

The Prophecy

“He, it is Who has raised among the unlettered people a Messenger from among themselves who recites unto them His Signs, and purifies them, and teaches them the Book and Wisdom though before that they were in manifest error; And He will raise him among others of them who have not yet joined them. He is the Mighty, the Wise.”

(Surah Al-Jumuah 62:3-4)

A companion of The Holy Prophet (saw) relates:

“One day we were sitting with The Holy Prophet (saw) when this chapter was revealed. I enquired from Muhammad (saw), who are the people to whom the words and among others f them who have not yet joined them refer? Salman (ra), a Persian was sitting among us. The Holy Prophet (saw) put his hand on Salma (ra) and said ‘If faith were to go up to the Pleiades, a man from among these would surely find it.’” (Bukhari).

Revelations from Allah

  • The Promised Messiah (as) received many revelations from Allah. The first was in 1868/9.
  • He defended Islam from many false allegations and spoke and wrote about the beauty of Islamic teachings.
  • He took the first bai’at – the pledge of initiation – from people on 23rd March 1889.
  • He wrote more than 80 books.
  • He spoke and debated on the issue where he could discuss the beauty of Islam and Islamic teachings

An Interesting Event

Hazrat Musleh Ma’ood (may Allah be pleased with him) said that at daybreak Ahmadis used to wander around with keen expectation wishing to find out what revelation had been received the night before. They would ask whichever of the Promised Messiah’s children they saw about this. Hazrat Musleh Ma’ood says he and his siblings too would quickly look at the Promised Messiah’s notebook as soon as he left for Salat to see any revelation noted down or they would hear about the revelation in the mosque from his blessed mouth. Thus, was the zest to strengthen faith, glorify and thank God for enabling to accept the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace).

(Friday Sermon, 12/04/2015)

Small Stories for children

The Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) used to relate that a gardener’s wife had two daughters. One was married in a family of potters and the other in a family of gardeners. Each time it became cloudy she would panic and say one of her two daughters would suffer. On asking she would explain that if it rained the daughter married in potters’ family would suffer and if it did not rain the daughter married in gardeners’ family would suffer. It is rained the clay pottery of the first daughter would be damaged and if it did not rain the gardens tended by the second daughter’s family would be affected. Likewise, the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) related that two individuals from Qadian had some dispute. Their friends tried to reconcile them but they both insisted to take the matter to the court run by the British. They were both followers of the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) and they both requested him to pray for them. Faced with a dilemma the Promised Messiah said he prayed that may the one who is on truth win. Requesting prayers in this way is like the story of the mother who feared that rain or no rain would affect one or the other daughter of hers because someone had to lose out!

Life Lessons and examples

In talking about the Promised Messiah (peace be on him) and his daily routine Hazrat Musleh Ma’ood (ra) says that The Promised Messiah (peace be on him) worked hard to maintain his health and to keep his body very active. He was not lazy or inactive at all. Instead, he was very hard working and very much liked to be in seclusion. He did not ever shun the hard work and many times it happened that whenever he had to go on a journey then the horse was sent by the servant ahead of him and he used to walk on foot, sometimes covering 20 to 25 miles he would reach the destination. Rather many times he used to travel on foot and very rarely he would ride at the back of the mount. This habit of walking on foot remained till the end of his life and when he was over 70 years of age with a number of diseases, yet he used to go out for fresh air and walk about 4 to 5 miles, even up to 7 miles. He used to mention that at the time before his old age he used to get up early before the Fajr prayer and would undertake a walk from Qadian to Wadala. While on the walk, the call for Fajr prayer used to happen at around 5.5 miles of the journey near a village where he used to offer the supplication.

The Promised Son

The Promised Son known as Hazrat Mirza Bashir-ud-deen Mahmood Ahmad or Hazrat Musleh Ma’ood’s(ra) birth had been prophesied decades before its occurrence most prominently in the Holy Qur’an whilst also having been explained by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Holy Qur’an states: “And He will raise him among others of them who have not yet joined them. He is the Mighty, the Wise.” (62:4)

Thus, “this verse clearly indicated that in the future other noble persons would be sent by God Almighty to bring mankind back towards His Creator. When this verse was revealed, one companion, Abu Hurreira, repeatedly enquired from the Holy Prophet (pbuh) as to whom the words “who have not yet joined them” referred? Another companion, Salman, who was from Persia, was also sat in the gathering. When answering Abu Hurreira’s question, the Holy Prophet (pbuh) placed his hand on Salman’s shoulder and said: ‘If Faith were to go up to the Pleiades, a man, or men, from among these would surely bring it back’ (Sahih Al Bukhari).

“The Holy Prophet (pbuh) had thus explained that a time would come when the beautiful religion of Islam would become corrupted and defaced. At that time God Almighty would not stand by, but due to His Infinite Love, he would instead send people from amongst the Persian race who would reform Islam and once again spread the true teachings of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). The ultimate fulfilment of this verse came in the person of the Promised Messiah (as) who was sent as a Prophet by God Almighty to rescue Islam from evil forces both within and out of Islam. However, the Promised Messiah’s(as)advent did not herald the completion of the prophecy. On the contrary, because God Almighty had clearly used the words ‘among others of them’ in the verse, Allah had clearly signalled that He would send more than one person. There is no doubt that Hazrat Mirza Bashir-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad (ra) was also sent in fulfillment of that grand Qur’anic prophecy. Among other things, this is evidenced by both the events surrounding his birth and his vast achievements in the cause of Islam.” (The Promised Son by Abid Khan).

The Promised Messiah (as) wrote an announcement in relation to the prophecy revealing the birth of ‘the Promised Son’ on 20th February 1886. This was published in a local newspaper known at the time as ‘Riaz-e-Hind,’ dated 1st March 1886. It is, however, essential to note that this was not on a green paper neither was its later developed publication in the form of a leaflet printed on 22nd March 1886. This leaflet included specific details on the divine prophecy for the understanding of both opposers and believers. For example, it highlighted that the birth of the Promised Son may occur at any point during the period of 9 years.

What followed that was a phase of ridicule and criticism by opponents of all faiths against the Promised Messiah. This was because, after the announcement of the prophecy a daughter named Ismat was born on 15th April 1886 followed by the birth of Bashir (the first) who passed away shortly after 16 months on 4th November 1886. As a result, opponents mocked and questioned the prophecy and its divinity. However, despite criticism from all corners, the Promised Messiah spent this time of pain and anguish with utmost humility, patience and in the remembrance of his creator. We learn therefore that the extent of patience and steadfastness exhibited by the Promised Messiah(as) was essential to awaken an understanding of patience in the hearts of Momins (believers) at the standard that their creator wills.

The death of this Son allowed people to question the revelation as it had claimed that the Promised Son would have a long and fulfilling life who would live to serve his faith. The Promised Messiah in response explained that he had not had a clear sign from Allah that this son would be the same Promised Son upon whom he had previously received the revelation and neither had he claimed that the first-born child would be that child.

Consequently, on 1st December 1888 the Promised Messiah (as) wrote a small leaflet named “Haqqani Taqreer bar Waqea Wafat Bashir,” comprising of an explanation defending the prophecy. Stating regardless of anything the set period of 9 years beginning from its initial 20th February announcement will serve the Promised Son according to Allah the almighty’s promise. Hence this leaflet which reiterated and drew close emphasis upon the details of the prophecy was printed and distributed on a green paper, otherwise famously known as the ‘sabz ishtehar.’

On 12th January 1888 around 10 o’clock in the evening, Allah the Almighty miraculously fulfilled this prophecy through the blessed birth of a son showing the Promised Messiah clear signs that this is the Promised Son in accordance to that prophecy. The Promised Messiah(as) announced the birth of the promised son in ‘Siraje Muneer’.

Moreover, Hazrat Musleh Ma’ood (ra) truly possessed all the qualities clearly mentioned in the prophecy. He was blessed with a long and fulfilling life and befitted all the names that were given ‘such as Mubashir [the Promised One], Bashir [Bearer of glad-tidings], Nurullah [Light of Allah] Sayyeb [Heavenly Rain], Charagh Din [Light of Faith] etc., which reveal his perfect potential and inherent light.

New Years (Jan 2019)

Benefits of Tahajjud

What is Tahajjud Prayer?

Tahajjud prayer is a type of optional, voluntary prayer (Nawafil). It can be offered individually or in a congregation.

When is it offered?

Tahajjud prayer is offered in the late hours of the night. The time for Tahajjud prayer starts after midnight and ends when the time for Fajr prayer starts. To offer Tahajjud prayer, one has to go to sleep after Ishaa prayer and wake up at night to pray again. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) used to offer Ishaa prayer and then go to sleep, waking up again just after midnight to pray Tahajjud. To make up for that sleep, he would usually then take a short nap in the afternoon.

How many Raka’at is Tahajjud prayer?

Tahajjud prayer typically consists of 8 raka’at, offered in sets of two raka’at. However, anywhere between 2 to 8 raka’at can be offered. In a Friday Sermon delivered on January 2nd 2015, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V (may Allah be His helper) said: Our Jama’at should be regular in Tahajjud. If not much they should offer two units of Prayer.’

What are the benefits of Tahajjud prayer?

Tahajjud prayer is a way of becoming close to Allah Almighty. Tahajjud prayer allows you to gain Allah’s special favours as prayers that are offered in Tahajjud are more readily accepted by Allah. One becomes closer to Allah when offering Tahajjud prayer as he/she gives up sleep and the comfort of a bed to pray to Allah Almighty.

Although it is not obligatory, it is very strongly emphasised by the Holy Quran. It has always been the practice of the pious people to perform this Prayer regularly in order to gain Allah’s special favours. The supplication made during Tahajjud Prayer are granted acceptance by God Almighty readily. It is also a vehicle for achieving nearness to God, because at that hour, one gives up sleep and forsakes the comfort of one’s bed, to fall prostrate before one’s Lord.

Tahajjud not only benefits an individual’s relationship with Allah, but also has physical benefits. In a Friday sermon delivered on 2nd January 2015, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V (may Allah be His helper) said: ‘Tahajjud should be organised because it was the way of the earlier righteous ones and it is a source of gaining closeness to God. This practice keeps one away from sin and removes bad habits and also keeps one away from physical ailments.’

Although it is not compulsory, Tahajjud prayer and its benefits have mentioned several times in the Holy Quran:

Verily getting up at night is the most potent means of subduing the self and most effective in respect of words of Prayer. (73:7)

Starting the New Year with Tahajjud

The New Year is celebrated across the world with fireworks and celebrations happening throughout the night, however, the majority of these celebrations consist of worldly activities have no religious concern. As Ahmadis, we are guided by Islam and our Holy Prophet (saw) to spend our New Year by self-reflecting and praying to our creator. In a Friday Sermon delivered on 30th December 2016, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V (may Allah be His helper) guided us all by saying: Thus, if we spend the last night of the previous year and the new day of the New Year pondering over our spiritual conditions and by spending time supplicating towards Allah then we will be the ones who will be working towards a good life hereafter. And if we also indulge in worldly wishes and affairs, then we will lose a lot and gain nothing.’
